There was remarkably little fire damage, although the dryer was a complete right off!

198 Friday 10/11/00 RTA risk of fire, M27. We were ordered to enter at Junction1, Redbridge Hill entered at junction 3. ( it is standard practice to put a pump onto each carriage way under these circumstances. This is to ensure that if the incident has been given as the wrong carriage way, then a pump arrives quickly, it also ensures that a second tank of water is available at an incident, as there are no hydrants along a motorway. Redbridge arrived before us, and informed control we were not required, we turned around and went home.

The stream was faster flowing than he had anticipated, and he had begun to be swept away. He had climbed a tree to avoid the drag of the water, and this was where we found him. A volunteer was lashed to a line, and made his way through the swollen waters to reach the tree, the boy was rescued and returned to dry land. Stop: SSCC.

157 Friday 15/09/00 19:34 SSC pumping required at Southern water pumping station, Henderson Road. Heavy flooding of the cities drains by the rain storm had broken out of the pipeways, and flooded the subterranean levels of the pumping station, which descended approx. 60 feet below ground level. We were very close to the foreshore, and so ran out hose to the foreshore, and dropped a hard suction line into the collection pit of the pumping station. We didn't have a hope of dropping the water level by much, but the hope was to prevent the foul water flooding the streets. This we managed, until we were relieved by an oncoming pump.

On arrival found a skip fire on the outside of the building had ruptured a plastic gas main, which was flaring merrily! The first thought was that was the extent of the fire, however, on further examination it was discovered that the fire had spread into the unit. A forced entry was made, and a BA team was committed to deal with the fire. The BA team discovered a very mature fire which had involved most of the factory unit. The next door unit was entered, but found to be empty, with no fire spread. Six pumps, 1 SEU, 1MRV, 1 ALP and the canteen van were called for at the height of the fire. The fire was fought on two fronts with a forced entry made at the rear of the building. Eventually the fire was brought under control, but not before almost the entire contents of the unit had been destroyed. The last bit of fire was the flaring gas main, and the gas board had to be summoned to dig up the gas main, and shut of the supply from there. This was a long job. The adjacent properties Suffered from smoke logging, but little fire damage. We initially were deployed to assist the BA servicing, but were soon sent home, as the job was naturally scaled down.

136 Saturday 26/08/00 01:49 Car fire outside of a private address on Calmore Estate. One car well alight, on arrival. This was a bit of an odd one, both the engine and passenger compartment were on fire, but neither seemed to be the source of the fire. It appears that the fire may have started underneath the car, possibly from the ignition of severed fuel lines! Stop: 1 car SEV 2 HPHR, 2BA.

135 Saturday 26/08/00 00:03 Hedge on fire, near the allotments Water Lane. Due to the number of calls this job received, and the fact that there was a shed in close proximity to the fire, two pumps were dispatched. On arrival found a large section of fir tree hedging well alight, and spreading along the hedge. Two seats of fire were obvious. The fire was dealt with, whilst a couple of explosions occurred, due to small gas cylinders, and aerosols in the caravan. The fire was brought under control, and the cylinders removed, and cooled down. Stop: Motor caravan SEV.

113 Sunday 06/08/00 04:14 Back to the recycle bin, which had managed to flare up again! This time instead of shuttling the water from the hydrant, using the pumps tank, we ran out hose, and drowned the little so and so! Stop: Rubbish 4 jets!

A medium sized recovery van with the engine compartment well alight, and starting to spread to the passenger compartment, met us! the fire was knocked out pretty sharpish with the aid of two hose reel jets. Nowadays, due to the amount of nasties produced in the smoke, it has become normal to wear BA fighting car fires. Stop: engine compartment SEV, 2 HPHR, 2BA

111 Sunday 06/08/00 00:04 Bin alight, at a local supermarket in the middle of Totton. On arrival found one bin well alight, near to the entrance, then checked and found one of the paper recycling skips well alight as well. The paladin was extinguished pretty quickly, but the recycle bin took some tackling! We only had access into the skip via the narrow slits used to deposit paper, as the skip was very large, and parked right against a wall, so that the door could not be opened without moving the skip, something we were not in a position to do. Under these circumstances we tend to "open end" a length into the skip, that is we run a hose into the skip, without a jet on it, and fill the skip up with water.. Stop: Rubbish, 2 main jets. We were on station, doing the paper work ( pun not intended!) when the bells went down for the next shout.

104 Sunday 30/07/00 02:32 Fire, pumps ten, on the fifteenth floor of a block of flats in Shirley. On arrival found a well developed fire out through the windows, BA crews were put in, but the nature of the fire, and the difficult conditions meant that it was quite some time before the fire was under control. Early on the fire was made up to "pumps 15", by the Deputy Chief Fire Officer. Unfortunately, in opening the front door of the flat, to fight the fire, the fire spread out into the corridor. Because of the number of people still in residence, the job was treated as "persons reported" until the fire was doused. A long and protracted job, which was brought under control, and doused, but not before severe damage had been caused.

A wooden shed was obviously NOT involved in fire, but there were some quite good flames inside. A Gas ring was in use, powered from a gas cylinder. It is assumed that the pipe had developed a leak, and the leak had caught from the naked flame of the burner. The pipe had burned then through, losing the gas supply to the burner. The cylinder was removed, the fire extinguished and then the gas supply turned off. For good measure the cylinder was placed in a swimming pool, (which just happened to be handy) to ensure that it was cool.

011 Friday 28/01/00 20:43 Relief Crew to Thatched Roof Fire, Fyfield, near Weyhill, Andover. On arrival found a row of five terraced thatched cottages, almost completely destroyed by fire. As all thatches a small fire starting in the roofing soon spreads, and despite the best efforts of the brigade, is rarely stopped. Our tasks included tidying up the water supplies, and clearing up unnecessarily hose, now that the main fire fighting had concluded, and damping down was in operation, as well as general tidying of the scene. Returned to home station somewhere in the region of 03:00, but had some considerable cleaning to do before we could be dismissed.

010 Thursday 27/01/00 22:42 Chimney fire at a house in central Totton. (Another early night gone for a burton!) A difficult chimney, owing to the construction! The manager arrived on the scene and looked at the pile of rubbish. He the said he thought that some one had nicked the large orange bin the rubbish had been in, subsequent investigations uncovered the remains of some orange plastic, under the debris! Stop: small fire, 1 HPHR

007 Sunday 23/01/00 21:54 SSC to tanker leaking liquid nitrogen, A326, Marchwood. This was a HazMat incident, and so three pumps and an SEU were despatched to the scene. On arrival found a large Nitrogen tanker with a plume of white gas discharging from a roof mounted vent , quite a sight on a dark and frosty night! This was all part of a normal safety valve operating, under slightly abnormal conditions. There was little the brigade could do to stem the flow, and as the tanker was not in an unsafe condition it was driven to it's destination, were it could be dealt with by the owning company. Stop: SSCC.

006 Sunday 23/01/00 06:52 Rubbish Fire to the rear of a garden in the Brokenford area of Totton. Small fire involving rubbish in and around a large round waste bin. Right next to a wooden garage! Stop: one HPHR

005 Sunday 09/01/00 20:26 Chimney Fire in a private house in Brokenford, Totton. A wood burning stove, with no access to rod, so a roof ladder and hose reel were deployed to the chimney pot. A small amount of water was put down the chimney, which was then viewed, the chimney was clear of any fire. The inner walls were checked and found to be reasonably hot, so to be quite sure there were no further problems a TIC was called for. An officer brought the TIC along, and took charge of the incident. The area was checked out, and found to be safe. Stop: Chimney!

004 Sunday 09/01/00 19:05 Fire, derelict house next to petrol station Ringwood Road. Smoke issuing from garage at rear of property. Small fire involving rubbish, probably set by kids. Two pumps sent, as involved property, but we were sent back as redbridge had arrived first, and didn't need the second pump.

003 Sunday 09/01/00 15:18 AFA at our local recreation centre. A smell of burning from a bonfire outside of the building had been smelled by a member of the public, who had operated a break glass callpoint. Stop: A/C good intent. Smell from outside source.

002 Tuesday 04/01/00 03:37 AFA at a local supermarket. A drop in the water pressure had caused the spinkler pumps to auto start, this operation had triggered the fire alarm. Stop: A/C by sprinkler plant.

001 Saturday 01/01/00 02:41 Barn fire, make pumps four, Nursling Street Southampton. Whilst travelling to the scene it was possible to see a well developed fire, out through the roof. On arrival found that the barn contained stored furniture. This became an easier fire to deal with than a barn full of hay or straw. The contents burned a lot quicker! and were easier to extinguish. Unaffected areas were stripped of their contents, to prevent further fire spread, and salvage unburnt furniture. What a way to start the new year!
