237 Thu 30/10/03 10:02 AFA at a major hotel in Southampton. This was a two pump shout, and one of the St. Marys pumps was attending, however due to the continuing commitment at the Eastleigh job, they only had one pump available. 236 Wed 29/10/03 12:01 Fire, make pumps 10, at a very large warehouse fire in Eastleigh. As we left the station we could see a massive column of smoke rising from the fire. Just then the incidents went to pumps 15. On arrival we were confronted by an extremely large warehouse which appeared to be well alight from end to end and going like a train. It was thought that a dropped pallet containing disposable cigarette lighters sparked the blaze, but the speed of fire spread was very alarming. The water mains in the area proved to be insufficient to quell the fire, so we were sent, with our pump, to the river to relay water up to the job. This is where we spent most of our time, keeping an eye on the pump, maintaining the best water supply we could. 30 pumps were called at the height of the fire, and we were eventually relieved almost nine and a half hours after we had fist been called. The fire was still burning at that time.

A car, was wedged under the front end of a parked articulated trailer, but it was obvious that the car had come from the direction of the rear of the trailer. We later learned that the car driver had taken evasive action to avoid running in to another lorry. A recovery service had been requested by the police, and they arrived, and dragged the car out from under the trailer, and at this stage we had nothing more to do, and so went home. Stop: SSCC no action by HFRS.

211 Wed 01/10/03 01:14 RTA Redbridge Causeway. A small car, carrying 4 young people, towards Southampton, had attempted to take the bends too quickly. The car had left the one open lane, and entered the coned area of some road works, where it struck the rear of a stationary lorry waiting to deliver tarmac to the work site. All four occupants were injured, and the roof had to be removed to release three of them, and the driver was only released when hydraulic rams were used to relocate the dashboard to give more space to help with his extracation.

The initial action was to salvage all of the furniture and belongings, and at the same time to try and make fire breaks by removing some of the thatch. Unfortunately the fire had too good a hold, and all of the roof was lost, with some damage to the first floor. A long job, as thatches always are. The pump was moved around the back of the store where it appeared that smoke was issuing. The order went out, to make pumps two, as we were now dealing with a fire. As the BA teams entered the plant room, it became obvious that the smoke they were seeing was in fact a vapor from a compressor that was leaking. At this point a HAZMAT incident was declared, and the incident was escalated to three pumps, and an SEU. The area was condoned off, and an inner exclusion zone declared. When the appropriate gear was assembled two BA men, wearing gas tight suits entered the plant room to shut down the equipment, and valve off the compressor.
