184 29/12/05 04:51 Stand by station 53 (Redbridge Hill) a couple of incidents had emptied the station. We received no further calls.

183 27/12/05 19:14 RTC Washdown, Bury road, Marchwood. An RTC involving a single car, which had lost control at some considerable speed, and snapped of a power pole, leaving cables dangling, and a dangerous height. No body was trapped, but the car was a real mess. The driver escaped without a scratch! The scene was made safe, and then handed over to the police, who had closed the road, pending the arrival of the SEB.

182 25/12/05 10:00 AFA at a local authority run block of flats, not very far from the station. A resident had left a teatowel on a cooker top, which had caught light. The fire had been dealt with by the resident, leaving us only the paper work to complete!

181 25/12/05 06:48 AFA at a factory unit on the Calmore Industrial Estate. A catering team were working early, and had lit their ovens which had operated the heat detector above them!

180 23/12/05 02:43 AFA at a manufacturing factory unit, on the Calmore Industrial Estate. The cause of the operated detector was traced to an electrical fault in a Power factor Correction unit.

179 22/12/05 20:59 RTC trapped, on the A326, west of Totton. A high speed incident, involving 2 private cars, involved in an (oblique) head on collision. Both drivers were trapped in their cars. Two teams worked each on their own car. On both occasions the full roof removal tactic was bought into play. Both casualties were successfully extracated, and removed to hospital by Hampshire Ambulance. The scene was then made safe, but not cleared, as the police were about to carry out a full collision investigation.

178 22/12/05 00:40 Report of fire in yard, near to the railway crossing. On arrival we found a skip on fire, in the rear car park of Lidls. 1 main jet, fed directly from the hydrant was used to extinguish. (As a side note there were two other fires in the locality at almost the same time, including a bin fire, and a van, which was apparently parked near to the front of a shop, and had damaged the shop front as well!)

177 21/12/05 21:39 Report of a caravan on fire, in the travellers permanent site on Bury road. Stop: FAGI, A/C by controlled burning.

176 20/12/05 11:45 RTC washdown, at a petrol station in the West Totton area. It appears that a driver of a powerful automatic car lost control, and reversed the car into a second car, and pushed the second car into third car, which ended up being pushed into a petrol pump! Fortunately there was no petrol spillage, and no injuries. The damage to the cars was minor, and it was possible to drive them all away from the incident, so no attempt was made to make them safe. Stop: No action HFRS.

175 18/12/05 15:15 car fire, near to the train gates, in the middle of Totton. A small fire involving a plastic engine tray, 1 HPHR used to deal.

173 17/12/05 06:10 Fire, make pumps six, at an address in the Maybush area of Southampton. A fire in a conservatory of a house had spread and involved another two properties. By the time we arrived the fire had mostly been knocked back, with damping down and clearing up operations in progress. At this point we were declared surplus, and returned home.

172 14/12/05 00:54 Front door on fire, in the Water Lane area. It appears that a Christmas door decoration may have been deliberately ignited, as two people were helping the police with their enquiries, further down the road! The fire was OOA.

171 10/12/05 17:27 AFA at a block of flats, not very far from the station. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking.

170 10/12/05 06:30 Sound of smoke alarm, and smoke in the area, on an estate in the Totton area. The smoke was steam from a boiler, but the sound of the smoke alarm proved to be elusive, and two pumps full of fire-fighters failed to find the source! Stop: FAGI.

169 03/12/05 17:46 Relief crew, Fire Pumps 12, at a country house, in the Bramdean area. A devastating fire had destroyed most of the roof of this lovely country house, as well as most of the first floor, and some ground floor rooms. The occupants had been out when the fire started. Lots of salvage work had saved a lot of possessions form the house, though some had been destroyed. The fire was still in progress when we arrived, though some of the structure was declared to be unsafe. We were involved in damping down operations, which owing to the nature of the structure were carried out from outside the building. The ALP was used extensively to damp down from above. We were finally relieved around 01:00, and returned home to wash a very muddy pump!

168 05/12/05 00:36 AFA at a sheltered block of flats for the elderly in the Calmore area. Steam from someone's bath had operated a smoke detector.

167 02/12/05 23:31 AFA at a remote arts centre building in the West Totton area. The alarm was ringing, and a quick check of the building revealed no cause. The keyholder arrived, but without keys, so we handed the situation over to him, and left site.

166 02/12/05 13:36 Smell of burning in a shop unit in the centre of Totton. A faulty light fitting had caused the scare.

165 02/12/05 12:29 Stand by at Redbridge Hill Fire Station. A "persons reported" fire in the Shirley area had emptied the city of pumps. We received no further calls.

164 30/11/05 18:51 Chimney fire, at an address to the north of Totton. The fire had died down by the time we arrived, but we wanted to be sure that it was out. We "steamed" the chimney by splashing water onto the fire, causing lots of steam to flow up the chimney. When it was all quiet we could be sure that all was well. Stop: Chimney.

163 26/11/05 15:59 AFA at a local authority run block of flats for the elderly, in the Calmore area of Totton. A/C by steam from a bath!

162 26/11/05 11:47 AFA at a school in the Eling area of Totton. Stop: A/C by fumes from workman's blowlamp.

161 24/11/05 07:49 Stand by at Redbridge Hill fire Station. A fire scare at the new shopping centre in the middle of Southampton had emptied the city of pumps. However the situation was soon resolved, and pumps returned to home station, we were relieved about half an hour later, having had no further calls.

155 16/11/05 21:38 Car Fire, in the Ower area. A private car by the roadside, with the engine compartment well alight on arrival. The fire was spreading to the passenger compartment, but was stopped by firefighting. 1 HPHR and 2 BA used to deal. The owner was on site, having been driving home when the incident started.

154 16/11/05 16:47 People trapped in mud, in the vicinity of Buskets Wood. Some people had gone for a nice walk in the forest with dogs, and their children, and had become trapped in a muddy patch. A team went into the forest to locate them, and to assess their predicament, and in fact were able to free them. Two adults were assisted, and five people in total were walked to safety. Stop: SSCC.

153 15/11/05 21:12 AFA at a ditribution wharhouse, on the Calmore Industrial Estate. the most likoley cause for the alarm was fumes from a fork lifttruck!

152 13/11/05 05:34 Report of a bin on fire at a block of local authority run sheltered flats for the elderly. On arrival we found a wooden external bin shed well alight! Although the fire did not spread into the main building a couple of windows above the fire failed due to the heat of the fire, and smoke did make its way into the main building. 1 main jet, and a hose reel was used to quell the fire, with the PPV in use to remove the smoke from the building. The residents of the flats were removed to a place of safety whilst the fire was in progress.

151 12/11/05 13:55 AFA at a warehouse unit on the Calmore Industrial Estate. The fire alarm was obviously sounding, but there were no signs of fire. Control had been unable to raise a keyholder, so having checked the building as fully as we could we came away.

150 09/11/05 03:56 AFA at a school in the Houndsdown area of Totton. A smoke detector had triggered itself for no apparent reason! No action by HFRS.

149 31/10/05 18:41 AFA at a local authority run block of flats, very near to the fire station. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking.

148 31/10/05 10:46 RTC trapped in the Whitemoor Lane area. A relatively minor collision between two private cars, which left one driver injured in the car. In the end the ambulance personal decided to lift the casualty from the car without having to improve the access, so HFRS assisted with casualty handling, and made the scene safe.

147 31/10/05 09:53 AFA at a private health facility in the marchwood area. We were only requested because Hardley were short of riders, and were showing three, however, on arrival at the station, control were on the phone to inform us that we had been stood down.

145 30/10/05 08:47 Hazmat incident, pumps 20, Southampton University. A major fire involving a reasonably large office and laboratory complex, which was completely involved in fire. Fire was spreading to another nearby block. There had been an unwillingness to commit crews inside the incident, as there were hazardous materials within the complex. This was a major incident with roads closed all the way around, and a smoke plume which could be seen for miles. Our involvement was to pump water as part of a water relay, and in this role ( as driver on this incident) I watched the smoke billow from behind another building, whilst tending to the pump. Eventually the fire was brought under control, and the message sent to control "Fire surrounded". We were relieved at about 14:00, and returned to home station.

144 30/10/05 08:41 Stand by Station 56 (Hightown). Whilst en-route there the university incident went to pumps 20, and we were diverted to.....(see 145)

143 30/10/05 08:24 AFA at the Royal South Hants Hospital. The hospital is on St Mary's patch, and it was a bit of a surprise to us that we were tipped out to this one. We figured that all of the town pumps must be busy. As we drove to the RSH we saw the enormous smoke plume from the Southampton University incident, and realised where the other pumps might be. On arrival at the RSH a pump was already there and dealing ( it is policy to send two pumps to a life risk AFA such as a hospital) We were declared to be surplus to the incident, and asked by control to proceed to.... (see 144)

142 23/10/05 19:36 Report of a telephone box on fire, in the Woodlands Road area. On arrival, sure enough the old red style telephone box was full of smoke. A firework placed inside the box was to blame! No action by HFRS.

136 02/10/05 11:02 AFA at privately owned block of sheltered flats not very far from the station. Some burnt toast was the cause of the alarm!

135 27/09/05 01:23 Fire, pumps three, at a farm property in the Applemore area of the Waterside. An extremely large pile of logs and wood was well alight. The first problem was to get a good water supply to the fire, after that we set about knocking back the fire, and then damping down. After a little over an hour of fire fighting the fire had been knocked back, and we were sent home.

134 26/09/05 21:53 SSC risk of fire. A call had come into the police from a young person threatening to set themselves on fire. We were despatched in case the threat was realised. On arrival the police had the matter in hand, and nothing was involved in fire. Stop: No action HFRS.

133 23/09/05 04:58 RTC trapped, involving a HGV, M271. An articulated container lorry had turned onto it's side on the sharp bend at the entrance to the motorway. The driver was not badly injured, and was removed from the cab after the windscreen had been removed. The incident was then handed over to the police to deal with recovery of the vehicle.

132 22/09/05 07:34 AFA at a residential care home for young people with learning difficulties in Minstead. This was a false alarm caused by water flooding through a smoke detector, after a shower had overflowed.

130 18/09/05 22:32 AFA at a business premises on the Rushington Business estate. On arrival a representative of the electricity board met us and explained that they had a power problem, and had just connected a generator. About 13 years ago my Uncle retired from the fire service. It was his retirement that spurred me on to join my local station. I had grown up with his involvement as a retained fireman in the background of my life. He always spoke with such enthusiasm about his time in the service and I found it infectious, I wanted to have some of that.

Stan Launchbury rose to the rank of Sub Officer in charge of Enysham Fire Station in the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. He was respected by all who had dealings with him, from the firemen under his command, right up to the Chief Officer. He was that sort of guy.

Sub Officer Stan Launchbury (retired) passed away today, the 13th of September, at approximately 14:00, after valiantly fighting cancer. I understand that he was not in pain, but just became completely overwhelmed by the disease.

I aspire to be a fraction of the fireman that he was. All that I do today, and in the future is dedicated to his memory. May he rest in the peace he truly deserves.

119 21/08/05 20:30 Call to bushes on fire, Jacob's Gutter Lane. The area was checked, but no apparent signs of fire. We returned to home station.

118 21/08/05 16:50 AFA at a local authority run old peoples home, in the Water lane area of Totton. Fumes from cooking were the culprit!

117 19/08/05 23:49 AFA at a local authority run block of flats, pretty close to the station. A late night cooking session had been forgotten!, the resultant fumes triggered the AFA system!

116 14/08/05 01:25 Car fire, outside of a pub, in the north Totton area. A (presumed) stolen car had been parked on the forecourt of a pub, and torched. 2 HPHR and 1 BA were used to deal. The cause was not thought to be accidental.

115 14/08/05 00:10 Assist Police with recovery of vehicle, involved in RTA (below). When the recovery people arrived to recover the car they found it to be almost impaled on a post, the car had run over. This was now in a "barb" position, and to pull the car off the bank, might well have impaled the petrol tank with the post. The post was cut using our hydraulic combi tool. Stop: SSCC, police assisted.

114 13/08/05 23:12 RTA Trapped, near to the level crossing, Junction Road, Totton. We located a small area of grass that had recently been on fire, and damped the area down with 1 HPHR.

110 01/08/05 19:43 Car fire, outside of a private address, near to the station. We were on station, during our weekly drill period, and so did not take too long to get mobile. On arrival we found a four by four, with heavy smoke issuing from under the bonnet. A hose reel was used, the bonnet opened, and the fire soon put out. The cause of the fire seemed to be an accidental electrical fault.

109 31/07/05 04:58 AFA at a block of sheltered flats for the elderly. A/C by fumes from cooking. God save us from insomniacs with a taste for toast!

108 30/07/05 09:55 SSC to a petrol station forecourt, in the Michegan way area. A reasonable spillage of petrol had already been covered with sand by the local staff, the source of the spillage was a converted double decker bus, where the petrol was used to fuel an onboard generator, a split had caused the fuel to leak. The area was made safe the bus was moved off the forecourt to await recovery, and the spilled petrol was covered with dry sand, then contained within plastic bags. The area was declared safe, and the station reopened. Stop: SSCC.

A ladder was put up, but he person was unable to access the top of the ladder. By this time a BA team had entered the flat by the front door, and dragged the casualty out of the flat. The fire was mostly extinguished from the front window, comprising, as it did,of one chair. Due to the nature of telephone calls received by the brigade, and other agencies prior to the fire, it is not thought that the cause of the fire was accidental.

91 Sat 09/07/05 11:56 Report of a fire, in a block of flats, near to the Redbridge Roundabout area of Southampton. Normally this would be a two pump attendance, by Redridge Hill, however one of their pumps was already involved in a call, and we were sent as the second pump. Redbridges ladder arrived on the scene before us and infomred control that this was just a small grass fire, and that the second pump was not needed. We turned around and made our way home.

We had been called to assist ambulance, who had a male who had, how can I put this delicately, become very friendly with a vacuum cleaner. We set about cutting the plastic body of the Hoover with a hacksaw, just to remove the bulk of the unit, and make our next move a bit easier. We then set about cutting the body of the Hoover with a junior hacksaw, with the idea of cutting so far, and then possibly breaking the remained of the plastic, rather than cutting all the way through. At this point the gentleman found that he could remove himself from the body of the Hoover, and our work was completed. Stop: SSCC, 1 male released from Hoover, by HFRS!

27 Sat 26/02/05 17:10 Call to smoke seen around Giddings timber yard, On route to the incident control received more calls, suggesting a serious fire was in progress, and turned on more pumps. On arrival we found a large timber mill building well alight, with flames spreading at an alarming rate. Pumps were set in, and a water supply found by the front gate. This fire was tackled from the outside, and as it was a timber clad building, most of the walls had burned away very quickly, so we were able to fight the fire without too much to impede us. However, this was a well developed fire, which encompassed a large area, and it was two to three hours before the fire was "knocked back" and the process of damping down could begin. There were several propane cylinders in the building which had to be cooled, some of which had vented gas, thus adding to the fire loading. We were relieved from the scene at about 22:00, by which time the whole building was more or less out, but almost completely destroyed.

26 Sun 20/02/05 Building on fire, near to the centre of Totton. On arrival we found the shed to the rear of a derelict building well alight, with flames out through the roof. The incident was damped down, and the building the shed was attached to was checked, and part of a roof stripped to check for fire spread. Stop: Fire in derelict building, Cause not though to be accidental.

25 Fri 18/02/05 18:26 On the way back from the previous shout, we were sent on to a car fire in the Rufus Stone car park. On arrival we found that Lyndhurst had also been sent, and had almost dealt with the car fire, unfortunately, as the smoke was beginning to clear it became evident that there was a casualty in the car. It was assumed that the casualty had committed suicide. The first pump in attendance remained on the scene, and after unloading our water, we were not required, and returned to home station.

24 Fri 18/02/05 17:52 Cat stuck on roof. This is the first "cat on roof" call I have ever been to, and was surprised, as the brigade is taking a bit of a harder line with such calls, due to financial constraints. On arrival we found a cat sat on the top of a chimney stack on top of a steep pitch roof. The roof ladder was used to gain access to the roof, however the cat took that as a signal to vacate his comfortable post, and took the roof tiles. Unfortunately, due to tiredness, he could not hold on, and slipped slowly down the roof. We managed to pitch a ladder to the rear of the house, and climbed it in time, to reach the cat before it reached the eaves. The cat was picked up, reasonably unceremoniously, by the scruff of the neck, and carried down to be reunited with its owner. Stop: SSCC.

As we turned out of the station control informed us that they had received a number of calls saying there was smoke issuing and they had mobilised a second pump. Later they informed us that due to the high number of calls a third pump had been mobilised. As the building came into view we could see flames breaking out through the roof, and a huge column of smoke rising from the building. On arrival we found a well developed fire that had spread from the ground floor level right up through this very tall building and out roof. At the height of the job there were approximately 12 pumps in attendance, as well as four aerial appliances, and numerous other support vehicles. Water had to be pumped from a like opposite the site as the local hydrants were not sufficient to supply the job. We were relieved at approximately 04:00, by which time the fire through the structure was more or less out, however the rubbish remaining in the collecting pits was still alight.

9 Sun 09/01/05 17:58 On leaving the scene of the previous incident we were asked to proceed to:- Fire, at a private address in the West Totton area. A house was smoke logged. The cause of the smoke was traced to an overdone Christmas pudding in a microwave. PPV was used to clear the smoke.

8 Sun 09/01/05 16:59 RTA involving a car and an electricity pole. The car had veered off the road, and hit the electricity pole, pulling down the overhead feed to a house. The occupants of the car were relatively unhurt, however, they could not be given assistance in the car until the cable had been removed from where they were draped over the car. The SEB arrived, and made the scene safe, the occupants were removed from the car, by Hampshire ambulance, and taken to hospital. Stop: SSCC, scene made safe by HFRS.

7 Sun 09/01/05 Car fire, in a communal parking area, on the Calmore Estate. A car quietly smoking from under the bonnet. As there was no one about we had to break into the car to access the bonnet pull, and with the bonnet open we found the insulation under the bonnet quietly smouldering. 1 HPHR used to deal. The cause of the fire was something of a mystery, it is possible that the fire might have been caused by a discarded cigarette picked up on the road.

At first access was a problem, however a window was open right by the source of the fire, some water was used to dampen down the fire from outside whilst access was gained, then 2 BA were committed, and the fire was quickly dealt with. It is though that a candle had been placed on the TV set, which had burned down, and then set fire to the plastic casing of the TV. A considerable amount of smoke damage to the first floor, but this was kept to a minimum as the occupant had closed the door to the affected room.
