170 Mon 27/12/99 13:44 Smoke issuing from a vent. One of the business units on Rushington Business Park. No evidence found on arrival. Keyholder called. On arrival we checked out the building, and found the heating system to be putting out a lot of steam and fumes, when it kicked in. Stop: A/C fumes from heating.

169 Fri 24/12/99 22:05 By radio, flooding to house in Marchwood. This job was just around the back from Beaulieu's job. Lots of work with a sqeegee, and a light pump cleared most of the water from the floors in the house, after we had knocked out the threshold strip on the back door. No further calls, so we went home! Returning to home station to dry out some very cold and wet feet! Most of us had "topped" our Wellingtons within ten minutes of arriving at the first incident!

168 Fri 24/12/99 20:28 Flooded sub station arcing, Long Lane, Marchwood. on arrival found flood water lapping around the LV distribution cabinet. Members of public pointed out the same cabinet as being the source of the sparks. Beaulieu were already in attendance, and took on the major role on this job. We had a look, along with an officer dispatched to the scene, at another couple of jobs, one of which needed no assistance, then on to a third job, which did!

167 Fri 24/12/99 18:02 A chapter of inclement weather stole my evening! Picture this for a planned quiet Christmas Eve! Just about home from work, and parked in front of the tele, ready for a stress free evening in, when: Called to flooding affecting electrics, at a pub in Eling. On arrival found about three feet of water on the road, and both pubs flooded out. Electrics switched off to both pubs. Pumps made up to three, for pumping. One private house was affected, and assistance was given moving furniture out of the flood water. Control were snowed under with calls, and radio messages were very difficult. We did not commit our pump to the job, but held off, so as to be ready for further calls. at 20:28 we were called to go to the job above.

167 Sun 19/12/99 16:35 Chimney in a private house in the centre of Totton. Open coal fire in an old bungalow chimney going like a train! Fire in grate put out, and removed first, then chimney rodded to deal with the flue. Stop: Chimney.

166 Sat 11/12/99 15:10 RTA, car in river, Totton Causeway. This call was treated as "persons trapped" and the pump was despatched to the scene as quick as possible. On route we donned BA incase we needed to hurry an underwater rescue. Fortunately on arrival we found that no one was in the car, which was the right way up, with the water level lapping around the bottom of the windows. Stop: No persons trapped, no action by HFRS.

165 Sat 11/12/99 13:11 AFA at one of the local sheltered old peoples flats in Totton. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking.

163 Mon 29/11/99 07:57 (Another lie in on a day off work lost!) SSC, lift trapment at a office in Totton. Power had been lost to the building, 1 person was released from the lift. Stop: SSCC.

162 Thu 25/11/99 18:36 I had been out playing a game of squash, and was literally just about to step into the shower when the bells went down. I switched off the shower dressed hurriedly and turned out to:- Fire at a private house in Totton. On arrival we were greeted at the back door by smoke issuing, and some commotion. The occupier stated that they had got the fire under control, but needed help. Two BA men were committed to the kitchen to find that the fire was centred in the chimney above an Aga. They soon realised there was nothing they could do, and withdrew. We then entered with a toolkit and unscrewed a removable panel to gain access to the chimney. The fire was now out, and a small amount of soot and debris was removed from the chimney shelf as a precaution against reignition. No further action. Stop: Chimney, OOA.

161 Tue 23/11/99 22:03 Domestic AFA at a private house in Ashurst Bridge. The property enjoys a fully monitored burglar / fire alarm system, hence we were called to an AFA. The cause was a burst radiator, the steam from which had triggered the smoke alarm!

160 Mon 22/11/99 00:51 Rubbish on fire, rear of Totton precinct. (Only yards from previous shout, and at exactly the same spot as a previous early hours rubbish fire!) Stop Rubbish, 1 HPHR, cause doubtful.

156 Sat 20/11/99 11:29 Car fire outside of a house on Calmore Housing Estate. On booking mobile we were informed by control that a second call had been received stating fire now out. We proceeded for details (standard practice) On arrival found a car with no obvious signs of fire, or damage. It would appear that some oil had founds it's way onto the catalytic converter, and had just got hot enough to smoke. Stop: No action by HF&RS

155 Sun 14/11/99 20:47 AFA at one of the sheltered old peoples homes in Totton. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking.

154 Sat 13/11/99 05:20 Relief crew for thatch fire in Chilbolton. A small two up two down thatched cottage had suffered a thatch fire, the first call had been received at approximately 19:50 last night. We would be the last crews to attend the incident. By the time we arrived there was little more to do, just pull out some of the thatch material, and damp down. The crews who had worked all night were very tired, and needed help to finish the task in hand. Only the chimney and some of the lower walls were still standing. The thatched cottage next door enjoyed a lucky escape. It stands only a few feet away!

153 Thu 11/11/99 18:26 Whilst still at Redbridge Hill. Fire, smoke visible, at a hospital in Southampton. On arrival we were sent round to the back of the property to a skip which was well alight in the rear loading bay. The fire was not the big problem, the smoke was drifting into the hospital, and smoke logging a lot of the area. Some of the hospital was evacuated, and efforts were made (successfully) to quell, and quench the fire in the rubbish skip. The main thrust of operations was to clear the affected areas of smoke, the PPV was used to do this, to good effect. Stop: Fire in external skip, six BA two hose reels, one jet.

152 Thu 11/11/99 17:38 Standby at Redbridge Hill Fire Station. A persons reported shout on the Millbrook estate had emptied three out of the four pumps from the city.

151 Tue 9/11/99 22:09 AFA at a local recreation centre. Steam from a steam room had operated a near by fire detector.

150 Mon 8/11/99 09:40 ( I was in the middle of grouting some wall tiling in my kitchen, when called to:-) Lock out, one year old child still in flat. On arrival found a first floor flat, with the keys and young child inside, Mum outside, doing her fruit! A window was open, so I climbed a ladder, and went through the window, opening the door was the easy bit.

149 Sun 7/11/99 16:58 AFA at a local old peoples sheltered housing complex. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking.

148 Sun 7/11/99 12:04 Stand by at Hightown fire station. An extremely large exercise in Hamble had denuded most of the pumps in the area. No further calls.

147 Fri 5/11/99 21:21 AFA at a large furniture manufacturer on Calmore Industrial Estate. Found both the fire alarm, and the burglar alarm ringing. Shift worker were on site, so they assisted us locating the board. No reason for activation found, no action.

144 Sun 31/10/99 14:57 Fire in a house on one of the council estates in Toton. Call had been placed by a neighbour who had heard a smoke alarm, and smelled smoke. A forced entry into the house found it to be smoke logged, but as there seemed to be some confusion as to whether anyone was in or not, we put the call to "persons reported". A search of the house yielded no casualties, so an " all persons accounted for" message was put back. A small fire was located on the stove in a rear kitchen. Some washing had been put on to boil, and then forgotten about, as the occupant went out. Stop: Small fire kitchen, 4BA, 1 HPHR. (My first assistance message!)

2/10/99 to 29/10/99 Three weeks holiday, and a fire brigade training course at Morten in Marsh Fire Service college, Hence no fire calls for almost a month!

143 Sun 26/9/99 02:45 RTA washdown A326 Pooksgreen. A one vehicle RTA where a car had left the road, and ended up on its roof in the scenery. Five occupants of the car had escaped from the car, prior to the arrival of the police, and four of these had left the scene, walking the rest of the way home! Stop: Area made safe.

142 Thu 23/9/99 22:28 Special Service Call Tank leaking Liquid Nitrogen at the rear of a commercial premises in Lynhurst. We were just arriving in Lyndhurst when the call went out that this was a small leak, and further pumps were not required. We turned our blue lights off and went home.

141 Tue 21/9/99 03:26 AFA at a local hospital for people with learning difficulties. Cause found to be water from an overflowing tank in the roof leaking through smoke detector.

140 Sun 19/9/99 17:21 House fire in Totton. Redbridge's Ladder just pipped us to the stated address. The police had arrived before us, and had ascertained that there was no fire at the address, and that the old lady knew nothing about it. We checked with control, who said that the caller was a young male on a mobile phone. We started to assume that this was a malicious false alarm. Control re-contacted the caller who told us that we should go to another address in the street, a hundred numbers up. A small fire, involving the floor boards of a derelict house was found, and put out with the use of a hose reel. The building was checked, and found to be empty, with no further fires. Stop: Derelict property one hose reel.

139 Sun 19/9/99 05:55 Shed Fire at a private house in Ashurst. Shed well alight, and mostly destroyed on arrival. Fire knocked back, and then Lyndhurst, whose fire ground it was, Took over damping down, whilst we topped up with water, and returned to home station.

137 Thu 16/9/99 02:56 Stand by C53 Redbridge Hill fire station.

136 Sat 11/9/99 16:58 RTA Washdown, Totton Causeway. A motorbike had lost control and poured oil and petrol over the road. 1HPHR used to wash the oil from the carriage way. Stop: SSCC.

135 Mon 6/9/99 08:02 A leisurely day off from work was interrupted by Person stuck in lift in one of the many old peoples homes in the area. On arrival found one old lady stuck in a lift above floor level. The warden was on site, and provided us with keys, so the release was fairly quick. Stop: SSCC 1 female released from lift by HFRS.

134 Sat 4/9/99 19:52 Car Fire on one of the private housing estates in West Totton. Control informed us on booking mobile that this was believed out. No signs on arrival. 132 Mon 30/8/99 12:40 Fire Pumps 10, Thatched cottage, "Barnfield" Brokenhurst. Large house with even larger thatched roof, well alight on arrival. Work had been done to salvage the furniture and personal effects from the house before we arrived, which was just as well, as most of the house, except from some small areas on the ground floor were destroyed, as the thatch burned down through. Stop: House SEV lots of pumps, BA and Jets!

131 Sun 29/8/99 21:28 Smell of Burning at a house in Totton. On arrival told by the occupant that this was a false alarm, they had traced the smell to a bonfire in an adjacent garden. Stop: A/C C/B

130 Sun 29/8/99 20:58 AFA in a sheltered housing flats complex in Eling. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking.

129 Sun 29/8/99 20:04 Fire, Type Unknown, Jacobs Gutter Lane, near to Post Office. No signs on arrival. Asked control for more details, they told us that the caller lived in Orchard Close, so we went to speak to the caller, but spotted the column of smoke prior to speaking to them, a bonfire in another back garden. Stop: A/C C/B

128 Sat 28/8/99 20:41 Car Fire outside of a house on Woodlands Road. Car engine compartment well alight, fire spreading to fence and guttering of adjacent bungalow. First priority to stop spread of fire, then tackle the seat of the fire. In this case the two were closely connected! Stop: Car Sev. 2HPHR.

127 Fri 27/8/99 18:41 Call came in as a house fire in a private house in Totton. On route we were told, by radio, that this was a car in garage. On arrival found a garage well alight. the garage was a purpose built garage with an extension built over. An entry was made into the garage, and fire fighting was started. Meanwhile the occupants arrived home, so their keys were used to enter the front door, to put a BA team into the house to check for further fire spread. This was a very lucky fire, the effects could have been so much worse. Apart from some smoke damage in the house the damage was confined to the garage, where all contents were destroyed. Stop: garage and contents severely. 2 HPHR 2 BA.

126 Thu 26/8/99 22:47 AFA at a old people's sheltered flats complex in Totton. This was the second call there in the day, the previous was to a small fire, caused by cooking left unattended on a stove. On this occasion an immersion heater element had become permanently live, and had boiled the contents of the tank. The resultant steam had operated the smoke detector outside the airing cupboard. Stop: A/C by steam.

125 Sat 21/8/99 16:39 Roof smouldering in a private bungalow in Totton. The father of the occupants (of two weeks) was lending a hand to remove some paint from the eaves. The blow torch had caught the wooden eaves alight. The father had then doused the flames with a garden hose. Stop: small fire eaves OOA 2BA to investigate roof space.

124 Thu 19/8/99 21:33 Fridge fire, in a private house on Calmore Estate. Police in attendance before us, the occupant had lifted the fridge out of the house, into the back garden, and the police had used a single dry powder extinguisher to douse the flames. Stop: Small fire fridge, OOA.

123 Sun 15/8/99 22:23 RTA trapped, minibus, possibly on fire, Millbrook Bypass. Collision involving a single van. Van made stable, and assistance given to ambulance in lifting single occupant from the vehicle. Stop: SSCC.

122 Sun 15/8/99 15:21 Barn Fire at a local farm Woodlands Road. On arrival found a barn well alight. The barn was standing on it's own, in the middle of a yard, with some wooden stable blocks caravans and a lorry in close proximity. We made up to pumps four (two pumps on the PDA) then got some water onto the lorry and the wooden stables, then started to drag the stored caravans out of the way. One had a wheel clamp on it to deter thieves. I guess that most thieves don't have Clan Lucas cutting gear on board, which made short work of the clamp, we were then able to drag the last caravan away. The lorry was also dragged out of the way using the farmers tractor. There was little we could do as the barn and contents had been a total loss before we had left the station, so we stood by and watched the contents burn, whilst keeping the stables cooled with a jet of water from a hose reel. After one hour the attendance was scaled down to a single pump and water carrier. These were relieved at 20:30.

121 Sun 15/8/99 07:45 AFA at a local care home for people with learning difficulties. Stop: A/C electrical fault.

120 Sat 14/8/99 02:45 AFA at a local sheltered housing block. AFAs at this time of the morning, to this sort of address can worry us because they are usually caused by cooking. And who in their right mind is cooking at this time in the morning, hence the alarm could be something more sinister. In this case it wasn't! Stop: A/C electrical fault.

119 Mon 9/8/99 21:30 ( right in the middle of our weekly drill period) Kids playing with matches and setting fire to paper near the tennis courts Salisbury Road Recreation Ground. Stop: OOA.

118 Sat 7/8/99 21:09 Report of smoke issuing, from the roof of a workshop attached to a local coach and taxi yard. Two pumps despatched to scene, lock on gate cut, as we thought we may have a going job. No signs found. building checked, and keyholder arrived on site. He checked the interior of the building. 116 Tue 3/8/99 05:53 RTA Trapped, Lorry. Jacobs Gutter Lane Hounsdown. On arrival, police and ambulance already in attendance. An empty articulated lorry had failed to negotiate the bend before the traffic lights, and had parked the lorry in the scenery, narrowly avoiding driving straight into a large oak tree. (not a very good idea, for anyone thinking of trying it!!!) The cab was intact, the driver was not pinned in, but he was injured. It took several fire fighters to assist lifting the poor guy out of the cab. Stop: SSCC. Assistance given, making scene safe.

115 Sun 1/8/99 16:15 Heath Fire Blackfield, pumps four (landrovers four, Water Carriers one, and MRV one). On arrival large area of gorse land well alight, fire spreading into trees. Lots of water put onto the ground to put out the fire, and damp down. Most gorse jobs are a long job, with a lot of damping down, by their nature, they tend to be away from a ready supply of water, hence we end up bringing water in, either in a water carrier, or by shuteling pumps. This one was resonably short, as we had enough resources to the job before we really lost it.

114 Sat 31/7/99 22:39 Tree fire, Cooks Lane Calmore Totton. On arrival found that this was controlled burning. Stop: C/B No action HFRS.

113 Sat 31/7/99 06:22 Flooding following burst water main, Eling Hill. Water was threatening the two pubs, The officer who had been despatched to the scene made up for two pumps to deal with the water. by the time we had arrived Southern Water had turned off the water supply, and the water level receded very quickly. Stop: No action by HFRS.

112 Fri 30/7/99 19:53 Stand by Redbridge Hill fire station. ( A chemical incident had emptied most of the city pumps) Before leaving the station a proceed message came through on the printer for a fence fire on Redbridge's patch, so we went to that. By the time we had put it out Romsey had been tipped out to stand by at Redbridge. We went home. Stop: 1 HPHR.

111 Tue 27/7/99 19:44 Barn fire, Bartley. As this was a reported fire two pumps and a water carrier as well as an officer were despatched to the scene. a small dutch barn was well alight. locals reported seeing a youth leaving the scene in a hurry when the fire started. Barn fires are usually long jobs for little reward. The contents are a total loss, and it usually involves a lot of work trying to put the fires out. If the fabric of the barn is lost it is usual practice to allow the contents to burn whilst ensuring it doesn't flare or spread. Water was bought in, on this occasion, by a shuttle of pumps and water carrier. The canteen van was also bought in to feed and water about twenty personal. A long job which had us out till after midnight. Barn was left with one relief crew who will probably stay there, letting it burn, till first light.

107 Sun 25/7/99 14:05 Grass Fire, Lydlynch Road Totton. Small area of grass and bushes on fire. Most likely cause deliberate ignition. Two HPHR.

106 Mon 19/7/99 21:22 AFA at a local nursing home. ( the same one as 17/9/99 at 13:56) On this occasion we located the smell of smoke coming from the top of the lift shaft. On further investigation smoke was noticed curling out from under the lift, which was at the bottom of the shaft. As it was a hydraulic lift the lift could not be lifted from the bottom of the shaft without the power being connected, and as the smoke was also issuing from the control box, and further investigation revealed the box to involved in the problem as well, there was little we could do until the lift engineer arrived. When the lift engineer did arrive on scene he operated the lift to a point where we could check underneath. No fire was discovered at this point. Stop: small fire, wiring associated with lift, OOA.

105 Sun 18/7/99 10:07 kids lighting fires in a garage block in Totton. Stop: Fire OOA no action.

( it looked like a lorry had suffered a split tank, and had disappeared from the scene. The police were requested, and arrived at the time of request! They requested sand from the council. We stood by incase of accident or other problem, but as the police closed the road, and the council had arrived we had nothing to do, so came home . Stop SSSC. No action by HFRS.

101 Sat 17/7/99 13:56 AFA at a local nursing home. Stop: A/C "other causes"

100 Thu 15/7/99 21:47 Fire in clearing used by woodsmen, near Totton. This site has had more visits for fires than almost any other address on our patch. On arrival found a large pile of wood chippings and branches well alight, with flames leaping up into the surrounding trees. For the want of a bit of breeze we would have had a major forest job on our hands! 1 HPHR and drag forks used to break up the piles and damp down the fire.

099 Wed 14/7/99 01:18 Rubbish on fire, O/S a private house in the Rumbridge street area of Totton. Rubbish put out for the bin men had been ignited, most likely maliousley. 1HPHR.

089 Sun 20/6/99 16:15 Fire involving a small section of hedge, and some dried grass, rear of a church, Netley Marsh, Totton. Small fire, probably started as a bit of a prank. 1 HPHR.

088 Tue 15/06/99 22:22 Fire now out, in a fish and chip shop in Totton. The cause of the fire was an external automatic flood lamp which had been fitted very close to the ceiling. The lamp had been on and the body had heated up to a point where the plastic of the body caught fire. The shop worker put the fire out with an AFFF extinguisher. Stop: Small fire flood lamp. no action by HFRS.

087 Sun 13/06/99 13:03 Domestic Fire Alarm, in a council house in Totton. This was the third call to this property within 5 weeks. The other two calls had both come in a smoke issuing and had been caused by an unattended chip pan fire, the occupant had gone out! With this in mind, on this occasion we rode to the incident donned in BA. On arrival found the house full of smoke, and a forced entry had to be made. The cause of the smoke was a burnt joint of pork in the oven. Stop: Small fire in oven OOA removal. 2BA.

084 Wed 02/06/99 01:19 Flooding affecting electrics, at a snooker club in Totton. This was a bit of a puzzle, as the club is situated on the first floor. The severe thunder storm was the key to the problem. A flat roof drain had come apart and was pouring gallons of fresh rain water into the main bar area. The source of the electrics was located and isolated. The water on the floor was brushed and squeegeed down the main stairs, and a polythene funnel was built to direct further rain water into a handy sink. Stop SSCC.

083 Tue 01/06/99 00:40 Rubbish, to the rear of the library, Library Rd. rubbish had been stacked under an oil storage tank used for heating oil. Fortunately we dealt with it before it had chance to cause any major problems. This lead to a discussion with police as to the whereabouts of a serial arsonist who had kept us so very busy over the Christmas and new year period about four years ago. (none of us had a full night sleep for two and a half months!) Stop: rubbish 1HPHR.

082 Tue 01/06/99 00:29 Bin alight, to the rear of Totton Precinct. This was almost the same spot as a couple of bin fires last week, at about the same time of night. Bin alight on arrival, Stop: Rubbish, 1 HPHR. Then told by police of a second incident they had just discovered. We contacted control, and informed them of the running call.

081 Sat 29/5/99 18:44 AFA at a residential home for young people with learning difficulties, Minstead. Alarm caused by fumes from cooking.

080 Fri 28/5/99 00:45 Stand by Redbridge Hill Fire Station. We only got as far as the end of the road, when we were sent home again by control. Control later phoned us at the station to explain that they had had a spate of calls caused by a group of marauding youths who had set a number of small fires as they weaved their way through Millbrook estate, this included a car fire.

079 Thu 27/5/99/ 21:35 Totton was in the middle of a torrential thunder storm. It was no great surprise when the bells went down, there are many different reason why a thunder storm would precipitate a fire call. As I left the house I thought I was going to get drowned. I was right, by the time I had locked the back door from outside I was pretty wet, then I had to cycle the 200 yards to the station, the road was like a river, I was soaked by the time I arrived at the station! The call was to a house on fire, following a lightening strike, Westfield Road Totton. On arrival no signs were found. We checked with the caller, who lived in a block of flats, she pointed out a street light which seemed not to be right. We checked it out, and thought it to be OK. We then passed a stop message to control. FAGI- A/C by light from street light, reflected on rain, thought to be smoke, following near flash of lightening.

078 Wed 26/5/99 18:15 Stand by Redbridge Hill Fire Station. No further calls.

077 Mon 24/5/99 23:56 Fire in a Paladin, rear of the precinct, centre of Totton. Small slow burning fire in paper in commercial large rubbish bin. 1 HPHR.

076 Sat 22/5/99 17:32 Standby Redbridge Hill fire station. No further calls.

075 Sat 22/5/99 15:38 Fire in trackside concrete hut on the main Waterloo Weymouth line where it passes through Totton. Small fire in hut, probably caused by kids, one bucket of water used to extinguish.

074 Fri 21/5/99 19:19 AFA at a large storage warehouse on Eling Wharf. Sprinkler system had lost it's pressure, and had triggered the fire alarm system. (This is a common arrangement, as a drop in pressure would indicate a fire, as the local bulb would burst, flooding the fire with water, and causing a drop in pressure.) Stop: A/C by other causes.

073 Fri 21/5/99 02:26 Special Service Call to Cat trapped under floor boards, at a residential address in Rushington. On arrival found that this was a first floor flat, with apparently solid concrete floors! An Officer had already been called out, he had made up for us. Sounds of kitten mewing traced to under floor, lower floor checked, and sounds traced to ceiling of room below. Thermal image camera requested via control. Small warm area identified in ceiling so ceiling cut away, to reveal the head of the kitten poking through a small hole in the concrete structure. Hole made slightly larger, with bolster chisel and hammer, and kitten greased with cooking fat. Kitten the struggled free of the hole. All noticeable holes were blocked up to avoid a recurrence. Stop: SSCC One twelve week old male kitten released by HF&RS.

072 Sun 16/5/99 12:09 AFA at one of the (many) retired warden assisted homes in Totton. Stop: A/C by fumes from cooking. (fat in oven from roast dinner!)

071 Tue 11/5/99 06:15 AFA at a large warehouse on Calmore Industrial Estate. Stop: A/C by using heat gun too close to heat shrink plastic.

070 Mon 10/5/99 17:16 AFA at large furniture manufacturing company on Millbrook Industrial Estate. Stop: A/C by Other Causes.

069 Wed 5/5/99 19:26 RTA Trapped, Chapel Lane, Rushington. Two car RTA at junction. One car had flipped over onto its roof, crushing the front part of the roof. Occupant had climbed out through the broken side window by the time we had arrived, and was sat on the curb receiving first aid for minor cuts. Tow pumps were not required at the scene, and as Redbridge's ladder had arrived before us, we left them to it. Stop: No persons trapped, making scene safe.

068 Tue 4/5/99 22:59 Hedge fire at the rear of a house on Calmore Housing Estate. Stop: Hedge, 1 HPHR.

067 Mon 3/5/99 18:51 Pile of sawdust on fire, in a clearing used for sawmilling, Pooks Green. We have attended this location on many occasions before to deal with an unattended pile of sawdust. This always has to be considered hazardous, as the fire may spread to other combustible material. Stop: Unattended rubbish on fire, 1 HPHR.

066 Mon 3/5/99 15:05 Smouldering bracken, to the rear of the old chapel, Archers Lawn Lane. Found the remains of a large bonfire which had been left by Forestry Commission contractors, still smouldering. Asked, by radio, for a representative of the Forestry Commission to attend, who confirmed that he was happy for us to leave the bonfire remains, without damping down. Stop: A/C by controlled burning, no action by HF&RS.

065 Sun 2/5/99 21:54 Unattended bonfire to the rear of a bungalow undergoing considerable renovation work in Totton. Call came from neighbours who were concerned about the fire spreading. Stop: unattended bonfire, 1 HPHR.

064 Mon 26/4/99 21:06 The Totton pump was involved in a drill and training session at Redbridge Hill fire station, and had just made up the equipment and was booking mobile to home station, when the shout came in telling us to proceed to a chip pan fire in a private house in Totton. We proceeded, however, Redbridge's ladder had stolen the march on us, in turning out, and arrived first. At arrival at the scene we found an electric deep fat fryer, in an outhouse, which had started a small fire. The fire was very quickly brought under control (the occupier had used some small domestic extinguishers on the fire prior to our arrival, which had knocked the fire back, but not extinguished it completely) Two BA wearers were committed, but were withdrawn reasonably quickly. Stop: Chip fan fire, in outhouse, 2BA 1HPHR.

063 Sun 25/4/99 11:14 Fire, now believed out, in a private house in Totton. On arrival found that a lighted candle had been placed too near to a pot of pot pouri, and a dried flower arrangement. The fire was indeed out. Stop: Small fire, lounge, OOA inspection only.

062 Sat 24/4/99 17:33 Stand by Redbride Hill fire station. (All town pumps out on minor calls) No Further Calls.

061 Sat 24/4/99 10:16 AFA Marchwood Incinerator. Stop: A/C other causes.

060 Thu 22/4/99 02:58 Fire at Marchwood Military Port. Call came in as a fire, so three pumps and a landrover was dispatched to the scene. On arrival we found a large multiple storage block well alight. Flames had breached the roof in some parts. The MOD Fire brigade were already in attendance at the incident. Due to uncertainty as to what was stored in the building, fire fighting was carried out with extreme caution. At it's height the attendance went to pumps ten. Eventually safe entry was gained into all the areas, and the fire was dealt with.

059 Mon 19/4/99 13:01 AFA local hospital for people with learning difficulties. (mostly now office accommodation) Stop: A/c by toast!

058 Mon 19/4/99 12:06 Stand by Redbridge Hill fire station. No further calls. (all town pumps out on various "minor" calls)

057 Wed 14/4/99 00:18 Running Call to bin on fire Rumbridge Street. Fire in litter bin. 1HPHR.

056 Tue 13/4/99 23:45 Car Fire in public car park in Totton. One private car well alight on arrival. Stop: private car of highway, 2 HPHR. Police were in attendance, and as we extinguished this fire they asked us to have a look at a bin fire, We contacted control and logged a "running call" to:- (above)

055 Tue 13/4/99 21:41 Standby Redbridge Hill fire Station. All city pumps involved in a fire at one of the hospitals in the city. No further calls. As a foot note it might be worth noting that as we booked "closing at home station" (changing from radio contact to station turn out system contact) Both Redbridge Hill pumps booked mobile to a fire. If only it had come in a few minutes earlier!

054 Tue 13/4/99 01:17 Special Service Call to spillage of petrol from a car parked on one of the housing estates in Totton. A ruptured fuel line had emptied the entire (but minimal) contents of a petrol tank onto the road. One HPHR used to wash away the petrol. Stop: SSCC.

053 Sun 11/4/99 19:54 Standby Redbridge Hill fire station. City pumps still involved with fire at paper mill, which had stripped the centre of Southampton of pumps. Even "minor" calls used all the available engines, hence we were put in to stand by. No further calls.

052 Sun 11/4/99 13:54 Standby Redbridge Hill fire station. On route we were called up, on the radio, and sent to fire, type unknown, Manor Farm Road Millbrook. Fire type unknown, so BA rigged on route to the incident, however on arrival found that it was the contents of a skip on fire. BA ditched. Skip fire extinguished by flooding the skip with water. Carried on to Redbridge Hill station. Both pumps involved with a six pump fire in Southampton, involving a paper mill. No further calls.

051 Sun 11/4/99 00:11 Standby Redbridge Hill fire station. Both pumps had gone to a pumps 4 at Sherfield English, with both pumps from Romsey. We are the next nearest pump , so its a bit of a mystery why both Redbridge pumps went to the fire. No further calls.

050 Mon 5/4/99 21:11 Car leaking petrol, Water Lane Totton. Abandoned car had been attacked, with an attempt to torch it. The individuals had been interrupted, and the petrol, poured into the car to do the job, left unignited. We washed down the scene to clear away the petrol, and ensure the innards of the car were too damp to be ignited. This seems to be an ongoing problem, and linked to the previous shout.

049 Sun 4/4/99 21:37 Car Fire in the car park of the Players Public House, Water Lane Totton. Thought to be arson, a window of the car of the car had been smashed and the upholstery inside set alight. One of the customers of the pub dealt with the fire by pouring a bucket of water over it. Stop: Small fire passenger compartment, out on arrival, cause doubtful.

048 Sun 4/4/99 14:55 Fire, domestic smoke alarm operating, smell of smoke, in a house in Totton. Neighbours had heard alarm smelled the smoke, and seen a smoke haze in the property, so they called us. No one in so we had to force an entry. Once inside we found that the smoke was coming from an oven. Further investigation uncovered an overdone leg of lamb! Occupants arrived home, and were first frightened, then very embarrassed! Stop: A/C by unattended cooking.

047 Sat 3/4/99 02:33 Smell of Burning at local hospice. Very foggy night, smell of bonfire caught up in mist had permeated into building. A/C by smoke from outside source.

046 Fri 2/4/99 12:14 AFA at local sheltered housing complex. A/C by fumes from cooking.

045 Tue 30/3/99 22:36 RTA Washdown A36 Ower. An old Volkswagon van had failed to negotiate the roundabout, and was on it's side, laid across the carriageway, spilling petrol, and engine oil. Assisted police in righting the van, and clearing it from the road, before hosing the road to eradicate the spilled oils.

044 Sun 28/3/99 16:23 Barn Fire, Make pumps four, Fawley. Barn well alight, and out through the roof on arrival. The first two pumps had worked well knocking back the initial fire, but several hours of work followed removing the straw and hay from the barn, taking it into a field, and damping it down. Fortunately several local farmers pitched in with tractors, trailers and "grabbers" fitted to the front of tractors, which cut down on the amount of work involved in clearing the stock. Like all barns (and thatches!) a long drawn out job.

043 Sat 27/3/99 21:50 Car Fire, Rushington Roundabout, Rushington. Stop: A/C by engine oil on hot exhaust manifold.

042 Sun 21/3/99 14:17 AFA at local elderly residents block. A/C by fumes from cooking.

041 Sat 20/3/99 20:07 Fire in playing field Calmore Road. Call received from the police, they had founds some youths attempting to set fire to bushes. Not much of a fire for us to put out, a couple of buckets of water was enough to douse the offending flames!

040 Sat 20/3/99 17:21 Chimney fire in a house in Eling (part of Totton) Chimney rods and stirrup pump used to rod the chimney and douse the fire. Roof ladders put up onto the roof to check the chimney and pot.

039 Fri 19/3/99 11:57 (another missed lunch!) Smouldering remnants of thatch, on job from previous day. Two pumps despatched. Only one required on arrival. We were turned back.

038 Thu 18/3/99 13:28 Roof of thatch cottage on fire Minstead. On arrival found smoke issuing from the thatch. Started to strip out the interior of the building, (a restaurant) and managed to salvage most of the furniture and stores. The thatch, meanwhile, was quietly smouldering, the way thatches do, and much though lots of water was played on the thatch, the fire spread through most of it. The outcome was that most of the thatch was lost, along with most of the first floor. There was also some fire spread to the ground floor. This had been a ten pump job at its height.

037 Tue 16/3/99 16:46 Fire involving shrubs, Salisbury Road Totton. Stop: controlled burning owner in attendance, no action.

036 Tue 16/3/99 12:00 Chemical spillage in ammonia based refrigeration plant at local refrigerated warehouse. Three pumps plus the SEU. Gas tight suits used to investigate. Nothing major found, awaited arrival of refrigeration engineers, then stood down.

035 Mon 15/3/99 19:17 AFA as below. System had yet to be reset. Stop as below.

034 Mon 15/3/99 17:40 AFA at local Multi-occupancy business enterprise units. Unable to access the main panel as the manager / keyholder had gone home. Alarm traced to one of the units used as a vehicle repair shop. Fumes from a smoky exhaust had triggered a detector head.

033 Sat 13/3/99 21:58 Stand by at Redbridge Hill fire station. Two reasonably sized jobs within Southampton had emptied all of the Southampton fire stations. No further calls received.

032 Sat 13/3/99 15:27 AFA at a factory unit on the South Hants Industrial Park, Calmore. Keyholder arrived shortly after us, and provided access. One smoke detector was found to be operated, however no cause for its operation was found. Stop: No fire, fault on system.

031 Fri 12/3/99 21:05 Fire at an address in Totton. The call appeared to indicate a house fire, and on arrival we found smoke issuing from a garage apparently part of a house. The garage was obviously involved in fire, and was broken in to to deal with the fire. The attached house was also entered to confirm no fire spread, or casualties. It was then found that the house was an unoccupied shop. The cause of the fire was most likely deliberate. Stop: Fire in garage, 4BA three HPHR.

030 Tue 9/3/99 22:09 Fire involving trailer and hay, now believed out, in local farm. On arrival found that the brigade had been contacted by the police, who had received a call, probably alleging vandalism, by a friend of the farmer. The farmer did no really want anyone contacting, and had gone to bed. A manger in the middle of a field was well alight, but on a damp cold March night this did not pose a threat. Stop: No action by HFRS. (NOTE: we get quite a few calls from the police, the caller may not wish to involve the brigade, [the fire may be long out] but as soon as fire is mentioned the police will contact the brigade, who will despatch a pump to the scene)

029 Mon 8/3/99 19:40 Monday is drill night, and as part of the regular activities we go and look around "risks" in our area. We were on our way to Fawley Power Station when we were called up on the radio to:- Fire involving children's climbing frame, Play area off Rose Road Eling. Stop: F.A.M. We then proceeded to Fawley.

028 Sun 7/3/99 16:40 Skip fire at the rear of some retail units in Totton. One 70 mm jet, and one open ended length of 45mm hose used to flood the skip. Probable cause kids mucking about.

027 Sat 6/3/99 00:58 AFA at a local rest home. Stop: A/C by electrical fault on afa system.

026 Mon 22/2/99 19:24 Rubbish on fire, children's play area, off Calmore Road. Some thoughtful soul had dumped two easy chairs in a children's play area. Another even more thoughtful soul, possibly mindful of how well foam filled furniture burns, had attempted to ignite the furniture. Fortunately it did not burn, and was all out on arrival.

025 Sun 14/2/99 20:36 Fire, in shed rear of derelict property in Totton. One HPHR used to extinguish. Cause thought to be doubtful.

024 Sun 14/2/99 12:27 AFA Ashurst Hospital. Stop: (from Lyndhurst Water Tender Ladder Rescue) A/C by electrical fault on AFA system.

023 Sat 13/2/99 18:49 AFA Minstead Training Centre Minstead. Stop: A/C by electrical fault on AFA system.

022 Sat 13/2/99 17:37 Car Fire M27 motorway between junctions 4 and 5. On way control informed us that it was thought to be a blown engine, thus we were ordered to proceed as for a non emergency response. Eastliegh pump arrived there first, and put a stop back, A/C by overheated engine.

021 Sat 13/2/99 Fire Pumps 12 Ship yard Hazel Road Itchen Southampton. A brick built building approximately 120 meters by 20 meters split into multi occupancy self contained commercial units. Two or three units well alight and out through the roof, on arrival. Fire ground was on the water front, but tide was out, so water had to be sourced from hydrants. lots of hose was run out to supply the fire. Fire was quickly extinguished, and we were relieved from the fire scene after about two or three hours, whilst damping down was still in progress.

020 Mon 1/2/99 18:15 Persons lighting fires to the rear of a village hall. Found evidence on arrival of youths playing with fire, fire lighters and aerosol cans and the like, possibly with the intention of intimidating the users of the hall. No fire found, no action.

019 Fri 30/1/99 21:00 Rubbish Fire behind Kwiksave Totton. Large pile of rubbish going like the clappers!!! 2 HPHR used. Spent a considerable amount of time raking out and damping down.

018 Mon 25/1/99 23:25 Telegraph Pole on fire, Car compound Totton. The supply cable on a halogen flood light had been yanked to the point that the lamp had been swivelled down to shine against the pole. The pole was quietly smouldering under the radiated heat of the lamp. The power was turned off, the lamp redirected, and a hose reel used to extinguish the smouldering wooden pole.

017 Mon 25/1/99 11:10 House Fire. On arrival, smoke issuing from first floor bedroom window. I had ridden in charge of the Totton Pump, and committed two men (BA) with a HPHR into the job. they located a small fire in the master bedroom. This was quickly extinguished. The occupants were on scene, and came into the house, once the smoke had dissipated enough, to recover documentation. The fire involved a bedside cabinet, the carpet, and the curtains. Cause was thought to be accidental. Stop: Small fire bedroom, 2BA 1HPHR. The Victim Support Unit was requested to assist the occupants.

016 Sat 23/1/99 19:16. Car Fire, Calmore Road. Car well alight on arrival. Occupants with car, they had just been on their way out to have a meal, the bakes had failed, and then smoke started pouring out from under the bonnet, they pulled over, and then flames leapt out. (fire spread in cars can be very fast!) Stop: One car on the public highway, severely damaged by fire, two HPHR.

015 Fri 22/1/99 06:44 Fire Junction Centre, Junction Road, Totton. Stop: A/C by Overheated electric motor on floor polishing machine.

014 Thu 21/1/99 23:40 RTA fire, Calmore Drive. RTA involving one private car, possibly stolen, and two parked vehicles. Stop: A/C by ruptured radiator,, scene made safe.

013 Thu 21/1/99 21:53 RTA, risk of fire. Winsor La Winsor. Car had collided with a lamp post, rupturing fuel line. Occupants had run off. 1HPHR used to wash away leaking petrol.

012 Mon 18/1/99 21:24 Fire, persons reported, in a domestic property in Totton. On this particular shout I had been tasked to ride BA. On arrival a bystander told us that the person trapped would be in a rear bedroom. approaching the house we saw thick black smoke billowing from the rear of the house. The front door was kicked in, and we went upstairs with a High Pressure Hose Reel. We found the fire in the back bedroom, and after knocking it back sufficiently to get into the room, soon found a casualty laid on the floor. As there was no sign of life we had to leave the body in situ. The fire in the room was extinguished, and then a PPV fan was used to clear the house of smoke. As this was a fatal fire the police were heavily involved, which delayed the fire fighting and clearing up operations. Possible cause smoking in bed! Not the first fire at this address. A lounge fire, several years ago was possibly the same cause. Additionally, I attended a small fire in almost my first year with the brigade, caused by leaving a pan on the stove, and the occupier going out.

011 Sun 17/1/99 09:11. I had just finished drying myself after a shower and a shave when the bells went down. I had to dress quickly to turn out to:- AFA local community hospital in Ashurst. The PDA is for two pumps, as if there is a fire, we would have to evacuate a number of bedridden residents, so man power would be needed. Stop: A/C by toast. (a very common cause of AFAs!)

010 Mon 11/1/99 00:16 AFA in local Rest Home. Staff had reset the fire alarm system prior to our arrival (big mistake!) Reported zone checked for signs of fire, all clear. Stop: Alarm reset prior to arrival, areas checked.

009 Sun 10/1/99 16:19 Smoke in area, Totton Nature Reserve. Smoke traced to a farm near to the M 271 motorway. Stop: A/C by controlled burning.

008 Sun 10/1/99 12:22 AFA local warden assisted flats. Stop: A/C by electrical fault on AFA system.

007 Sun 10/1/99 06:16 Fire, private house. On arrival found that the owner had discovered that the electricity service head has sustained an electrical fault, and was short circuiting. The SEB had already been called, and they arrived and took responsibility for the situation. As there was no danger to the property, we left them to it. Stop: A/C by electrical fault on SEB cutout fuse.

006 Sat 9/1/99 18:06 Smoke in vicinity rear of Commercial Road Totton. Stop: A/C by C/B private property Beaumont Road.

005 Thu 7/1/99 23:47 Fire, Caravan Park. Stop: F.A.M.

004 Sun 3/1/99 15:17 RTA near to local supermarket. The supermarket was built on higher ground than the surrounding houses, with a steep bank, approximately 3 meters high separating the two ground levels. An elderly gentleman had managed to drive his car off the end of the car park, hitting the side wall of a house, just below the level of the ground floor ceiling. The house was a timber framed house, which probably ruled out a structural collapse. The car ended up perched on what was left of the outside wall, almost at ground level, having fallen back to the ground. One elderly male driver was cut from the wreckage, and the scene was made safe. The occupant of the house had a lucky escape, as she had been sat, just the other side of the wall, moments before impact. The decision to take in the washing was probably the best one she had ever taken!

003 Sun 3/1/99 11:52 AFA local warden assisted residential block. Stop: A/C by smoking under detector head.

002 Sat 2/1/99 20:37 Bonfire rear of domestic property. The bonfire was unattended, and the wind was getting up, which could have caused burning embers to be blown all over the place, the decision was taken to put the fire out. Stop: Rubbish extinguished.

001 Sat 2/1/99 11:21 AFA in one of the units of a small business park. Stop: A/C by persons smoking under detector head.
